I want to take this opportunity to remind our residents about some basic home safety.
Lock Up Your Home
Close windows and doors when away or put in a “safety stick” in your window or door if you want to leave those things open a bit. Just this simple act prevents many more burglaries than people are aware of. Breaking in takes time and creates another chance of leaving evidence, two things criminal want to avoid.
Lock your vehicle and secure valuables somewhere else
This is so often times overlooked and a large part of our thefts could be prevented if these two simple steps were taken. GPS units and wallets/purses are so easy to just grab and go. This goes for all places, home, stores, and parks.
Be aware of your surroundings
If you are going somewhere for a jog or bike ride, make sure you have checked the course previously. I was in Fort Wayne the other day riding my bike and ended up in a neighborhood that I would’ve rather not been in. Be proactive in your own safety.
As always be aware of what you are putting out in the social media sites
The predators amongst us often utilize this tool to gain information and such to commit crimes against you and your loved ones. Keep your websites locked down with strong passwords and privacy settings.
If you ever have any questions or concerns feel free to stop and talk to any Columbia City Police Officer and we will be happy to assist you.
Thank-you, Detective Stephenson
